I’m a mental health professional (psychologist) and I run Metacognitive Training groups (MCT is a treatment for people with psychosis) and I think it can be so helpful for everyone. We all have moments where we jump to conclusions and then spiral. The metaphor of our thoughts as weather is a great one to help people realise things are temporary and it’s ok to have a bad moment

This means so much coming from a mental health professional. Thank you for sharing your insight.

This is what meditation is all about. It's essentially a training in metacognition and establishing a more compassionate relationship with your own mind. It is immensely helpful in widening the space between a thought and an action. Also a great ritual to start your day :)

Loved this piece, especially the bite sized actions one can take throughout the day!

I love how you connected this to meditation, and to building a relationship with your mind rather than trying to control it. Thank you for reading so thoughtfully 🤍

Train the explanations behind your automatic thoughts.

A thought repeated often enough becomes a pathway.

A pathway repeated often enough becomes a lens.

And a lens, if left unchallenged, can start to feel like reality.

So one of the best things we can do to improve our thinking is to become conscious of what our minds are automatically rehearsing.

To question it.

To retrain it.

To build better pathways on purpose.

I really liked this framing, especially the idea of pathways becoming lenses. Thank you for sharing this.
